Steven Krekels selected to advise in DG DEFIS Expert Group
DG DEFIS kicks off news Expert Group
On 30 April 2021 the Director-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) of the European Commission initiated a call to set up a group of experts on policies and programmes relevant to EU space, defence and aeronautics industry. This Expert Group will provide a forum for discussion and high-level aggregated inputs relevant to programmes, policies, and measures concerning the space, defence, and aeronautics industry.
Steven Krekels, Manager of VITO’s Remote Sensing Unit, was selected to join the Expert Group to provide advice and expertise in the broader space domain. With the appointment of Steven Krekels VITO Remote Sensing will support the European Commission in the preparation and implementation of EU legislation, programs and policies with regard to create a sustainable ecosystem. I’m happy to be invited for this continuous and inclusive dialogue with DG DEFIS on the challenges and opportunities in the domains of space, defence and aeronautics industries. This dialogue is an excellent forum to voice and defend the Belgian interests at European level.

This Expert Group will have a first introduction meeting on September 10, 2021 to discuss objectives and priorities to:
- provide advice and expertise to DG DEFIS in the preparation and implementation of policies relevant to the space, defence and aeronautics industry, in particular as regards the mapping of strategic industrial value chains and identification of critical technologies and supply chain vulnerabilities.
- facilitate cooperation between the Commission and stakeholders on questions relating to the implementation of Union legislation, programmes and policies relevant to the space, defence and aeronautics industry.
- stimulate an exchange of experience and good practice in the field of space, defence and aeronautics industry, including on synergies.
- deliver opinions on specific matters
- monitor industrial and policy developments
