Qinghan Dong

Qinghan Dong is a senior scientist with high interest in environmental management and protection. He graduated with a licence/master’s degree in chemistry at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and obtained later a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1991. He started his researcher career in 1990 at the department of environment of the Belgian Nuclear Research Center (SCK-CEN) working on the bacterial genetics of heavy metal resistance, before moving to VITO together with the department. Since 1999, his research in environment sciences took him to another scale, on global vegetation monitoring, travelling throughout the continents of America, Asia, and Africa. In recent years, his scientific interest is more focused on monitoring of agricultural production using earth observation. He coordinated namely the EU FP7 project “Crop Monitoring as an E-agriculture Tool in Developing Countries”. He has been the Principal Investigator within the Dragon 2-5 programmes since 2009, a collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. More than 50 research papers have been published in international peer-review journals recording his scientific research outcomes.
